Fire-Up Altavista is a complimentary, high-impact program for entrepreneurs and business owners ready to start or grow a business in Downtown Altavista. Over the course of 8 weeks, participants will receive hands-on business training, expert guidance, and the tools needed to succeed.
The program wraps up with a pitch competition, where participants will compete for a portion of $50,000 in grant funding to bring their business ideas to life or take them to the next level.
Due to grant funding there is no cost to the participant, but enrollment is limited to 14 participants. Applications are required and are due by February 15, 2026. New or expanding businesses must open by Dec 31, 2026.
WEEK 1
The Fire Up Altavista Kickoff Session introduces participants to the program structure, expectations, and key milestones. This session will also review Community Business Launch (CBL) grant eligibility requirements, required documentation, and important deadlines for funding consideration.
WEEK 2
Participants will explore the foundational elements of starting a business, including legal structures, registration, and compliance requirements. This session helps entrepreneurs choose the right structure while understanding liability considerations and risk management.
WEEK 3
This class focuses on building a strong brand, identifying target customers, and creating effective marketing strategies. Participants will also learn practical sales techniques and how to leverage social media to grow visibility and revenue.
WEEK 4
Participants will learn how to manage day-to-day business operations, including hiring, inventory management, and logistics. This session provides tools to build efficient systems that support long-term growth and customer satisfaction.
WEEK 5
This class covers essential licensing, permitting, insurance, and regulatory requirements for operating a business legally. Participants will gain clarity on state and local rules that impact businesses in downtown Altavista.
WEEK 6
These sessions provide a deep dive into small business finances, including budgeting, cash flow management, and financial statements. Participants will also explore funding options and financial tools to support sustainability and growth.
WEEK 7
Participants will examine what it takes to successfully locate a business in downtown Altavista, including site selection, zoning, and market research. The session also highlights local resources, real estate considerations, and opportunities to engage with community stakeholders.
WEEK 8
This session prepares participants to confidently present their business ideas using an SBDC-provided business plan template. Entrepreneurs will refine their pitches, understand judging criteria, and practice delivering compelling presentations.
WEEK 9
Following the core classes, participants will take part in guided pitch practice sessions with individualized feedback. These sessions are designed to strengthen delivery, sharpen messaging, and boost confidence ahead of Pitch Night.
JUNE 10TH
Participants will formally present their business ideas to a panel of judges 1:1 for grant consideration. Pitch Night serves as the culminating competitive event of the program.
JUNE 17TH
The program concludes with a public presentation and reception celebrating participants and their business concepts. This event provides networking opportunities and showcases the innovation and entrepreneurial talent shaping downtown Altavista.
