Fire-Up Altavista is a complimentary, high-impact program for entrepreneurs and business owners ready to start or grow a business in Downtown Altavista. Over the course of 8 weeks, participants will receive hands-on business training, expert guidance, and the tools needed to succeed.
The program wraps up with a pitch competition, where participants will compete for a portion of $50,000 in grant funding to bring their business ideas to life or take them to the next level.
Due to grant funding there is no cost to the participant, but enrollment is limited to 14 participants. Applications are required and are due by February 15, 2026. New or expanding businesses must open by Dec 31, 2026.
MARCH 11TH
The Fire Up Altavista Kickoff Session introduces participants to the program structure, expectations, and key milestones. This session will also review Community Business Launch (CBL) grant eligibility requirements, required documentation, and important deadlines for funding consideration.
MARCH 25TH
This introductory course provides essential knowledge and tools for aspiring entrepreneurs. Participants will learn the key steps to launching a business, including legal requirements, business planning, and setting goals to ensure a successful start.
APRIL 1ST
In this session, we explore current industry trends and consumer behaviors. Participants will gain insights into identifying their target audience and understanding how to position their products or services to meet market demands effectively.
APRIL 15TH
This course focuses on the fundamentals of marketing and sales strategies. Participants will learn how to create a strong brand identity and develop effective marketing campaigns to attract and retain customers, enhancing their overall sales approach.
APRIL 29TH
This finance course is designed to help entrepreneurs understand the concept of break-even analysis. Participants will learn how to calculate their break-even point, allowing them to make informed financial decisions and set realistic targets.
MAY 6TH
Building on the previous session, this course provides a comprehensive overview of profit and loss statements. Attendees will gain insights into how to interpret financial statements, monitor their business's financial health, and make strategic decisions based on their financial performance.
MAY 13TH
This session prepares participants to confidently present their business ideas using an SBDC-provided business plan template. Entrepreneurs will refine their pitches, understand judging criteria, and receive feedback to deliver their presentations. This session is only for participants seeking grant awards.
MAY 14- JUNE 5TH
After the sessions, those interested in applying for grant awards are are strongly encouraged to consult with the SBDC team to refine their business plan and presentation. Appointments can be arranged from May 14 to June 5 based on availability (please consider booking early).
JUNE 10TH
Participants will formally present their business ideas to a panel of judges for grant consideration. Meetings will be structured so each participant meets privately with the panel.
JUNE 17TH
The program concludes with a public presentation and reception celebrating participants and their business concepts. This event provides networking opportunities and showcases the innovation and entrepreneurial talent shaping downtown Altavista.
APRIL 22ND
This session delves into various business models and the importance of narrative in business. Participants will learn how to articulate their business story and assess potential risks, creating a comprehensive plan to navigate challenges.
